Force 10

Founded in Sligo on the north-western seaboard of Ireland in 1989 by Dermot Healy and the Markeivicz Unemployed Writers Group, Force 10 is a unique journal of record and discovery. Within its varied pages you will find stories both fictional and factual, sketches, photographs, prints and poems. The north west region of Ireland and indeed Ireland itself has changed demonstrably in the last eleven years and Force 10 serves in one sense as a document of that change. While over the years since its first issue the journal has become more established it has never become establishment. The ethos underpinning it is wholeheartedly inclusive, an ecology of eclectic ideas juxtaposed with factual accounts of the lives, loves, gains and losses of the people who have lived or passed through Sligo and its environs.

The mainstay of Force 10 is arguably its rich and varied range of interviews but it is more than just a journal of record. The poetry, prose and visual content of Force 10 reflect its inherent nature to push back the boundaries of experience, to discover. Many famous established writers, photographers and visual artists have contributed. Seamus Heaney, Pat Mc Cabe, Paul Durcan, John McGahern, John B. Keane, Sean Mc Sweeney, Barrie Cooke, and John Minihan to name just some. Their contributiobs have been juxtaposed with those of less established names, emerging voices often being published for the first time. The result is a periodical rich in diversity reflecting the thoughts, emotions and experiences of the broadest possible of people of and on the island of Ireland.

" I have to say that I find Force 10 magazine from Sligo astonishing. It is the most comprehensive and varied magazine I have encountered in Ireland "... Maurice Devlin (The Arts Show, R.T.E. Radio 1)

" I want to say how much I enjoyed Force 10 and particularly the Editorial which seems absolutely spot on. For too long the Metropolis has dominated all aspects of " culture ". Congratulations on a great issue "... Mary O'Donnell (The Irish Times)
